8 Homemade Lip Balm Recipes -
No Chapped Lips!
Self-made cosmetics are always the best!
Taking care of yourself and your skin with entirely natural products that you make yourself is very often very easy and less expensive than you might think! The lip balm is the perfect example: little ingredient, little preparation time, and a ridiculous cost!
For all those who want to abandon their Labello in favor of a more natural care, here is our selection of the best recipes for homemade lip balms!
The ingredients for a homemade lip balm
When we observe the composition of lip balms that we find on the market, we very quickly realize that they are often stuffed with products whose provenance is sometimes questionable! And while one might think that they are necessary to take good care of damaged or chapped lips, this is not at all the case ... The 100% natural lip balms prove it by the way! In fact, only 4 basic ingredients are enough to create a moisturizing lip balm, and since these ingredients are quite easy to find, it is quite possible to make your own lip balm. And don't be afraid: even if the properties differ depending on the recipe, a homemade lip balm is quite effective in treating dryness and chapped skin! Here are the essential ingredients to make a good lip balm.
Vegetable butter
The 10 best homemade lip balm recipes |
Rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins, vegetable butter has an excellent hydrating power. It is therefore perfect for nourishing dry or damaged lips, whether due to cold, wind or other climatic conditions. Probably the best vegetable butter is shea butter, which has the advantage of having a fairly neutral odor. But cocoa butter is also quite suitable, even if it obviously gives more flavor to the preparation! (Vegetable butter can also be replaced by honey, which has very similar moisturizing properties.)
Vegetable oil
Let's make a moisturizing lip balm that protects the lips |
Vegetable oil provides additional care depending on the properties you want to give to your lip balm. Sweet almond oil, for example, is able to promote healing while coconut oil provides another source of hydration. But for very dry lips that need to be deeply nourished, olive oil and apricot kernel oils are the most recommended.
Wax
Vitamin E for the skin: benefits and applications |
The wax notably brings a solid texture to the homemade balm: whether in a stick or in a jar, it is essential that it is not liquid once the recipe is finished. By opting for a little less wax during preparation, it is also possible to make the balm more creamy for easier application. But the wax also has the power to retain the oil used in the recipe for maximum efficiency! This wax can also be chosen from animal origin (beeswax, in particular) or from vegetable origin (candelilla, carnauba, soy, etc.).
A conservationist
Make your own three night creams at home |
Although the word is misguided, finding natural preservatives to make a homemade lip balm is nothing complicated, and most importantly, they can keep it for 10 to 12 months. The most common of these preservatives is vitamin E oil, but this oil can also be replaced by wheat germ oil which naturally contains a lot of vitamin E and which is often cheaper! (Contrary to what she might suggest, this wheat germ oil does not contain gluten!)
A little extra touch
7 homemade facial scrub masks |
Finally, even if it is only optional, you can also personalize your lip balm by adding a small original ingredient, either to flavor it or to give it more character. Essential oils are for example ideal for bringing a pleasant odor, and they have, in addition, for many, many properties which can be interesting (antiseptic, softening, etc.). But with beetroot, dried fruit powdered or even cocoa powder, you can also get natural dyes, enough to give more life to your lips!
100% natural lip balm recipes
These 100% natural lip balm recipes offered by J’ai Dit Oui use all the benefits of honey and beeswax to take care of the lips. Some preparations have a higher moisturizing power (this is the case with the Gourmet Chocolate recipe which highlights vegetable butters), but on the other hand, all have that little fragrant touch that make you want to test them! (Essential oils can obviously be replaced by others or be removed altogether.)
With all this beeswax, these lip balms have been designed to be rather solid, and it is therefore very easy to mold them and keep them in dedicated sticks or small jars of 5 or 10 g that it will be then easy to slip into your bag or pocket! (Always use new containers that have never been used, or clean and sterilize them well before reuse.)
The preparation
For the preparation of these recipes, whatever it is, nothing more simple:
- First melt all the solid ingredients in a double boiler.
- Remove from the heat and then add the liquid ingredients.
- Stir the preparation with a spatula until it is homogeneous.
- Pour everything quickly into the chosen container before it solidifies again!
- Let it cool down for a while before using your lip balm!

100% vegan lip balm recipes
Because sometimes 100% natural is not enough! With these lip balm recipes offered by Antigone21, we only use ingredients from plant sources. Honey and beeswax are therefore replaced by butters, oils and waxes whose virtues are just as excellent, and even if it is not specified, it is obviously even more judicious to favor organic ingredients as soon as possible !
By alternating oils according to the recipes, these balms are able to hydrate but also to offer softness to the lips, and why not a little color for who is tempted! However, it is not mandatory, and all these recipes are obviously customizable. As for the container, a stick or a small jar does the job very well, and again, you must either opt for a new container, or reuse one but by cleaning and sterilizing it correctly first!
The preparation
No matter which recipe you choose, the preparation is not very complicated:
- First melt all the solid ingredients (waxes and butters) in a double boiler.
- Then remove from the heat and add the liquid ingredients, i.e. the oils.
- Stir everything with a spatula.
- Pour the preparation obtained in the container of your choice before it hardens!
- Finally wait until the lip balm is cold and solid before using it!
